In Italy, the Gothic writing of northern Europe could not take root, because in this country still preferred the antique samples and there was already a local Beneventan writing. Therefore, the evolution of the Carolingian minuscule took a different path, and in Italy in the 13th century Rotunda (it. «roundish»), also called Italian Gothic, appeared. This letter received such a name because its main characteristic is rounded forms. In fact, Rotunda was formed on the basis of a very formalized version of the Carolingian minuscule under the influence of the Beneventan writing, from which the rounded forms appeared.
