Uncial calligraphy worksheets

The name Uncial comes from the latin uncialis - equal in length to one ounce. Littera Uncialis appears in the II-III century AD presumably in northern Africa. Uncial was the official script of the Christian church, which was rapidly spreading in the Roman Empire. And the latin-speaking believers made a latin version of the already existing Greek Uncial.

There are about 500 uncial manuscripts of italian, spanish, african and byzantine origin. The english scriptorium were especially famous for their uncial manuscripts.

Since IX century Uncial was used exclusively for headings.

Due to wide spreading, there are many kinds of uncial scripts. In the worksheets are represented the average simple variant of an Uncial.
