The German word Fraktur comes from the Latin «frāctus» (broken, broken). This script was given such a name because its strokes are sharp and broken.
Fraktur is a mix of German italic and textura quadrata. The first manuscript appear in the beginning of the XV century. A century later, the first typographic versions of Fraktur appear.
At a time when the whole of Europe was returning to the antiquity, in Germany the standard printed font was Fraktur, until the middle of the 20th century.
